School board appoints Joy Folsom as Interim Superintendent

Joy Folsom

During the Monday, May 13, 2024, work session, Cook County Board of Education Chairman Corkey Taylor announced that Joy Folsom, Assistant Superintendent/Student Achievement Director, was being considered for the position of Interim Superintendent of Schools.

Following a closed executive session to discuss personnel, and then several items of business in regular session, Board Member Brenda Moore made a motion to appoint Mrs. Folsom as Interim Superintendent. Board Vice-Chair Chad Sumner seconded the motion, and all were in favor.

Board Attorney Danny Studstill advised the Board that he would be drafting a contract for the Interim Superintendent.

Several family members turned out at the board meeting in support of Mrs. Folsom, and other school officials congratulated her for the new appointment.

Mrs. Folsom will serve as Interim Superintendent due to the retirement of Dr. Tim Dixon, who served six years as Cook Superintendent of Schools and 37 years in public schools. His retirement will become effective June 30, 2024.
