In loving memory of Mr. Oscar D. Patterson, Sr., born on October 17, 1933, in Adel, GA, to the proud parents of the late Mr. Fred Patterson and the late Ms. Willie Beatrice Rainge. He came into this world as a blessing, the cherished baby boy of their union. His birth marked the beginning of a life that would touch countless hearts and leave an indelible mark on the world around him.
As he embarked on his journey of education, Oscar attended Cook County Training School, where he found his passion on the football field. With an incredible talent and a fierce determination, he excelled as a running back, capturing the hearts of his peers and mentors. His prowess in the game was a testament to his dedication and hard work, qualities that would become hallmarks of his character.
It was during his school years that Oscar’s path intertwined with that of the love of his life, Ms. Yvonne Snead. Their story began to unfold as they forged a deep connection, one that would lead them to the altar. On May 17, 1958, surrounded by the warmth of their families and friends, they exchanged vows and embarked on a journey of love and togetherness that would span an incredible 65 years. This union was blessed with the birth of their three beloved children: Oscar D. Patterson, Jr., Melinda Patterson, and Veronica Patterson. Oscar’s dedication to his family was unwavering, and his role as a provider and a pillar of strength was truly remarkable.
Oscar’s faith journey was a cornerstone of his life, and he found solace and guidance at Harrell Chapel Missionary Baptist Church. His commitment was evident through his role as the Chairman of the Deacon Board, where he shared his spiritual wisdom and led devotional services that resonated deeply with all who had the privilege of experiencing them. His joyful spirit was often expressed through hymns like “The Fire Just Keep on Burning,” “Oh, It’s In My Veins,” and “That’s Alright.”
In the hearts of those who loved him, Oscar leaves behind a legacy of love, strength, and devotion. His memory will forever be cherished by his beloved wife Yvonne S. Patterson, his son Oscar (Karen) Patterson, Jr., and his daughters Melinda Patterson and Veronica Patterson, grandchildren, Oscar Patterson, III.., Martinez Newson (Tisha), Justin Patterson, Myleack Patterson, Ashley Patterson and Asia Patterson; great-grandchildren, Juvien Newsom, Brooklyn Newsom, Martinez Newsom, Jr., Aluadae Newsom and Junie Patterson.
He also leaves behind his dear stepbrother Willie (Bonnie) Hill of Jacksonville, FL. The bond of family extended to his sisters-in-law: Sadie Moreland of East Point, GA, Theresa Green of College Park, GA, and Mary (William) Zackery of Riverdale, GA, as well as his brothers-in-law: Willie B. (JoAnn) Snead, Jr., Atlanta, GA, Edgar (Jackie) Snead, Sr., and Deacon Leon (Rosa) Snead, both of Lenox, GA. Among his close kin were devoted cousins Elmer (Kathy) Clarke of Plantation, FL, and Lieutenant (Florence) Patterson of Orlando, FL, along with a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends who will forever hold him in their hearts.
In addition, Mr. Oscar Patterson’s parents, Mr. Fred Patterson and Ms. Willie Beatrice Rainge, brother, Mr. Alfred Patterson, sister, Ms. Trellie Patterson, and grandson, Desmond Patterson, all predeceased him. As we bid farewell to Mr. Oscar Patterson, Sr., let us remember the life he lived, the love he shared, and the memories that will keep his spirit alive for generations to come. May his legacy inspire us all to live with the same dedication, passion, and grace that he exemplified throughout his remarkable journey.
