Mrs. Marian Joyce Atherton Acree, 97
Mrs. Marian Joyce Atherton Acree was born in Wigan, England on May 17, 1925. She was the only child of John Arthur Atherton and Lily Atherton. Marian served in the British Royal Navy and was stationed in London, England during Germany’s V-2 rocket attacks. Marian met a young American soldier, John Allen Acree. In 1945 the two were married in Wigan, England.
When World War II ended, Marian left England to be with her husband. After attending the University of Georgia the couple moved to Adel. Marian became an American citizen and proud member of the Adel community. John Allen preceded Marian in death in 1993 after a short illness.
Marian is survived by her only child, John Walton Acree and his wife, Karilyn Sheree of Evans, Georgia, two grandsons, Jay Andrew Acree and his wife Miranda Michelle of Evans, Georgia and Eric Matthew and his wife Emma Catherine of Duluth, Georgia. She has two great grandchildren, Andrew Allen Acree and Madelyn Michelle Acree. Marian passed peacefully away on February 19, 2023 at Langdale Hospice House in Valdosta.
Visitation was held from 5:30-7:30 PM on Tuesday, February 21, 2023 at Boone Funeral Home. Funeral services were held at 11:00 AM on Wednesday, February 22, 2023 at Adel Weslyan Church with Rev. John Stephens III and Rev. Larry Bird officiating. Burial followed at Sunset Hill Cemetery in Valdosta, Georgia. The Wesleyan Church Choir sang “Amazing Grace (My Chains Are Gone)” and “It Is Well With My Soul” and Randy Booth played organ at the service. “Fields of Gold” was also included in the service. Jason Kelley, Jimmy Lawrence, Jimmy Lynn, John Zaciewski, Wayne Gilliard and David Cowart served as pallbearers.
