Sonny Franklin Powers, 69
Mr. Sonny Franklin Powers, 69, of Greensboro, Alabama, entered peacefully into eternal rest on June 5, 2022 at his home with loved ones present.
The elder son of the late Columbus Franklin Powers and the late Donnie Marie (Williams) Powers of Deland, Florida, Sonny left school early to serve in the Army in 1970, but later completed his education and received his high school diploma. He married his ”Angel”, Carolyn Fulghum, in 1971, and left to serve a tour in Vietnam that same year. Upon his return from overseas, Sonny was stationed in Fort Hood, Texas. Sonny separated from the Army as a Sgt (E-5) in 1976 and returned with Carolyn and their 3 children to Georgia. After a few years, they settled in Greensboro, AL.
Sonny loved the Lord and his family fiercely… He loved telling stories, making jokes, his favorite chair, country music, movies & TV shows, a good mystery book, casseroles, butter pecan ice cream, sweet tea, Babe Ruth candy bars, Alabama football and being a PawPaw most of all. After his service as an Army Radio Technician, Sonny held jobs as a mechanic, salesman and gas delivery man before retiring as an over-the-road truck driver. Sonny was a talented singer and musician for all his life. Over the years, he held positions as music minister, deacon and Sunday school teacher at Pineview Assembly of God in Marion, AL. He played guitar and sang in several gospel groups, ministering at various churches, nursing homes and the local prison. Sonny’s personality was larger than life. His laughter was loud and often heard and it will echo on in the hearts of all who love and will miss him.
Sonny is preceded in death by his wife, Carolyn S. Powers; father, Columbus Powers; mother, Marie Powers; sister, Susan McPherson; and 5 angel grandbabies, Cade, Cara, Brennan, Eden and Mariella Charris.
