Charles “Michael” Godwin, 74
Mr. Charles “Michael” Godwin, 74, of Lenox, Georgia, passed away on Saturday, April 2, 2022 at Shands Hospital in Gainesville, Florida, from injuries received in an accident on Sunday, March 27, 2022, at Lenox, Georgia. He was surrounded by his wife of 52 years, Jan Baldree Godwin, and family and friends. He was born on April 12, 1947 to the late Roy W. Godwin, Sr. and his surviving mother, Peggy Rutland Godwin of Lenox, Georgia. Michael professed his faith in Jesus Christ as his Lord and Savior at a young age and rededicated his life to Jesus as an adult. He was a life-long member of Lakeview Baptist Church in Lenox, Georgia.
Michael graduated from Cook High School and attended ABAC prior to enlisting in the Air National Guard, where he served from 1967-1973. He worked for the United States Postal Service for 37 years as a clerk and rural mail carrier. He was active in the National Rural Letter Carriers Association and the Georgia Rural Letter Carriers Association, where he served one term as District President. He also farmed most of his life.
Michael was a “history buff” who spent hours researching genealogy. He enjoyed reenacting battles from the War Between the States and participating in marker dedications for ancestors who fought in the War. He was a member of 3rd Florida and 26th NC Regiments. He and Jan also enjoyed fishing and camping at Keaton Beach in Florida with lifelong friends Royce and Patsy Boone and his brother-in-law, Durl Baldree, hosting fish suppers and using his smoker. His favorite pastime was watching television!
Michael is survived by his wife, Jan Baldree Godwin of Lenox; sons Jeremy Godwin and his wife, Holly, of Columbia, South Carolina, and Chad Godwin and his wife, Elizabeth, of Lenox, Georgia; his mother, Peggy Rutland Godwin of Lenox; mother-in-law Doris Baldree of Lenox, Georgia; granddaughter Charlotte Godwin of Columbia, South Carolina, who was her Papa’s sweet Punkin’; step-grandchildren Ryan Amos of Warren, Ohio and Tim Amos of Lenox, Georgia; sister June Myers and her husband, Ronnie, of Sycamore, Georgia; brother Randy Godwin and his wife, Beth, of Lenox, Georgia; and several extended family members and special friends who loved him.
Funeral services were held at 2:00pm on Friday, April 8, 2022 at Lakeview Baptist Church in Lenox, Georgia, with Rev. John Werner officiating. Visitation was held from 1:00 PM until 2:00 PM at the church prior to the service. Craig Betts, Kevin Betts, Brian Betts, Jamie Betts, and Abbie Godwin Barfield sang “Amazing Grace” and “I Can’t Even Walk (Without You Holding My Hand).” Musical accompaniment was by Susie Betts. Pallbearers were his nephews: Jeff Baldree, Kirk Baldree, Ryan Myers, Rayford Myers, Josh Godwin, and Christian Sumner. Interment followed at the Rutland Family Cemetery, with Rev. Jimmy Parker officiating. Flowers will be accepted or memorials may be made in honor of Mr. Godwin to Lakeview Baptist Church (P.O. Drawer 509, Lenox, Georgia 31637).
