Arthur James Adkins, Jr., 71
Arthur James Adkins, Jr. known to many as “AJ” was born June 22, 1950 in Cook County, Adel, Georgia to the late Mr. Arthur James Adkins, Sr. and Dorothy Jean Slone. He was formally educated through the Cook County School System and graduated from Cook County Training School in 1968. He enjoyed playing the drums in the marching band cheering on the Rams. After high school he attended Valdosta Technical College where he graduated with a Diploma in Architectural Drafting and Design in 1970. He married the love of his life Catherine Adkins on May 10, 1985. He joined Holy Community Church in 1990 where he was a faithful member until his demise.
He was a lover of music and in his younger days was a member of the band “Ghetto Union” where he played drums and sang alongside his good friend Ricky Barron who preceded him in death. He was employed by The Adel News Tribune where he was known as “Super Man” for 54 years and was still serving at the time of his demise.
He was preceded in death by four siblings: Michal Adkins, Donald Adkins, Raymond Adkins, Chris Williams and a special friend Clarence O’Neal.
He leaves to cherish his life his wife: Catherine Adkins; six children: Arthur James Adkins, Jr. III (Tiffany) of Valdosta, GA; Brenton Adkins of Adel, GA; Kelvie Lane of Adel, GA; Amy Deberry (Mira) of Adel, GA; Malynda Suggs (Adam) of Lenox, GA; Toylena Stumer of Valdosta, GA; seven siblings: Russel Adkins of Louisiana; Clifford Adkins of Baltimore, Maryland; George Adkins of Adel, GA; Patrick Adkins of Adel, GA; Jeffery Adkins of Ft. Hood, Texas; Yvette (Lee) Fuggs of Jacksonville, FL; Janine Woods of Sparks, GA; twelve grandchildren including his straightener Terri Adkins; one sister-in-law: Josie Stumer of Adel, GA; two special cousins: Willie Joe Deberry and Linda Gail Matchett and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends who will miss him dearly.
Funeral services were held Saturday, February 26, 2022, at 2:00 p.m. at Holy Community Church with Pastor George B. Horne officiating. A graveside service followed at Adel Cemetary. Visitation was held from 3-6 p.m. on Friday, February 25, 2022, at Lane Memorial Chapel. Condolences to the family may be conveyed online at www.lanememorialchapel.net.
