‘Adventure Begins At Your Library’

David M. Greene with Boy Scout Troop 828 stands next to the Free Little Library that he put up outside the Cook County Library in June 2022 as part of his Eagle Scout Project. The rules are only, “Need a book; take a book. Have a book; leave a book.” David also put up another Free Little Library outside Adel Wesleyan Church, meeting place for Boy Scout Troop 828. He also would like to set up a Free Little Library at Reed Bingham State Park.
Adventures for the entire family began last Friday, May 31, 2024, at the Cook County Library as the community celebrated the Summer Reading Kick-Off.
During the event, adults, children, and youth could meet representatives from Boy Scout Troop 828 and Cub Scout Pack 828, Park Rangers from Reed Bingham State Park, and the staff of Legacy Martial Arts. All were on site and ready to inform patrons about all the wonderful things they have planned for the summer, and beyond.
Free shaved ice was given to the first 100 to register for the Summer Reading Program and/or 1,000 Books Before Kindergarten. Free hotdogs (while supplies lasted) were served, and there were free, fun activities for everyone to enjoy.
Patrons could camp out under the 1,000 Books Before Kindergarten tent at 11:30 a.m. and 12:30 p.m. for a live demonstration of how to read to your child. Mrs. Joanna Bryan, a second grade teacher, demonstrated fun, cool ways to read to children. She offered tips to take home.
You could also register for Adult and Teen Cooking Classes and other upcoming summer events during the Kick-Off (slots are limited).
The library gave a huge thank you to all of their community partners for volunteering their time and resources to pour into our community. Special thank you to Piggly Wiggly, Sizzlin Flame BBQ, Desserts by Nell, Reed Bingham State Park, Adel Outfitters, Cook County Family Connection, Legacy Martial Arts, Cook Headstart, Coastal Plain Regional Library, Kelley Regan and family, Boy Scout/Cub Scott Troop 828, Mrs. Joanna Bryan, Coneheads, and library staff and student volunteers.
