Toys for Cook Kids reaches 350 families in need

Dozens of community volunteers turned out Sunday morning, Dec. 9, 2023, to distribute food and Christmas gifts for families, children, and the elderly at the annual Toys for Cook Kids event.

With donated items organizations and stored days in advance, the drive-thru event was held once again this year at the old Adel Elementary School. The less fortunate in the community lined up in their vehicles, and the volunteers placed donated items in the vehicles.

Observers were pleased to see how many young people from churches, school clubs, and sports teams participated as volunteers. Without the help of youth and children, Toys for Cook Kids would be very difficult to operate.

About 450 families, 85 senior citizens, and 49 Behavioral Health clients were given multiple bags of groceries, fresh produce, and fruit, along with toys for 900 kids, including 46 foster kids. For this year’s event, Sanderson Farms donated frozen chicken for family meals.

Law enforcement officers carried food and gift bags to the hones of elderly shut-ins.

Organizers said Toys for Cook Kids this year provided more food and giveaways than ever before, showing the growing need in our community, and the event had the most volunteer workers ever.

The 3rd Annual Battle of the Businesses took place last month. Local businesses collected nonperishable food items, given out at the Toys for Cook Kids event, Cook Community Bank won for the third year in a row.

The Adel Police Department recently collected 15 boxes of toys during their 7th Annual “Pack the Patrol Car” toy drive event at Walmart of Adel. The toys and cash donations were presented to the Toys for Cook Kids coordinators.

Toys for Cook Kids benefits the less fortunate during Christmastime in our community. The annual drive is designed to make sure every child in Cook County has Christmas.

The Kiwanis Club of Adel spearheads the Toys for Cook Kids volunteer efforts among many local clubs, charitable organizations, churches, school groups and teams, businesses, families, and individuals. The coordinators would like to thank all who volunteered and/or contributed to Toys for Cook Kids.
